Remember when you taught me to darn? You drew a thread from the weave of the fabric, “This is the best yarn, it doesn’t show.” Skillfully you sewed the hole. It closed nicely just like you said, “Brand new now, almost!”
Remember the blue dress you sewed? I wore it with matching blue sandals when I was five. “You look like the blue fairy!”, you smiled. That clever blue fairy, the heroine of all your stories! I drew a thread from that moment. It is the best yarn, it doesn’t show. One by one, I patched my wounds. They closed nicely just like you said, “Brand new now, almost!”
This poem is tender, nostalgic, and beautiful! Darning becomes a symbol of emotional repair and resilience passed down from a mother. The shift from literal mending to healing emotional wounds is seamless.
The poem’s strength lies in its gentle voice and the unspoken grief or pain beneath the surface, delicately stitched over with love, longing and memory.
I had to look up the meaning of ‘darn’ and learned it means to mend a hole in knitted material by interweaving yarn and material.
I was moved by the emotions invoked in such few words. The innocence and simplicity of childhood needs. A mother’s love; its moments of nurturing and soothing. The nostalgia later in life over the ability to ‘fix’ problems with ease.
I am left with the timeless mother-child relationship and a sense of love, life and longing for times past and people past.
In my mind’s eye and heart I have continued this story into the future in Paradise when this mother and child reunite again and the melancholy sadness will be replaced with pure and everlasting joy.
Thank you for honouring and drawing our attention to these beautiful moments and this sacred bond. I am at once taken back to my experience of these special moments with my daughters.
I Just went down memory lane after reading your words.
She means so much to me — I had a truly life-changing experience with her.
Her motivation and the lessons she shared helped shape the person I am today, Alhamdulillah.
This poem beautifully captures the deep, unspoken bond between a mother and daughter. It’s a connection that runs deeper than words, woven through love, shared memories, and the silent understanding that exists between them. Every line feels like a tender embrace, reminding us of how precious and irreplaceable this relationship is. It’s truly touching.
This is such a beautiful photo, Simala. It oozes love and tenderness. And your poem is so lovely, so full of heart and feeling. May you always go back to this moment in time and relive that love that was poured into you by your loving mom. May you always draw healing threads from her wisdom and the memories she left you with.
